Treaty of Lisbon

The Treaty of Lisbon amending the Treaty on European Union and the Treaty establishing the European Community

The Treaty of Lisbon amends the current EC and EU treaties (the Treaty on European Union and the Treaty establishing the European Community), without replacing them. The treaty was signed in Lisbon on 13 December 2007 by the representatives of the 27 Member States. This document aspires to solve the need for an institutional reform after the failure of the Treaty establishing a Constitution for Europe, the ratification of which was suspended after the rejections in referendums in France and the Netherlands in spring 2005.

The Treaty of Lisbon brings wide range of changes of the primary law of the EU. The most import change for our field of activity is that the pillar structure will be abandoned which means that the third pillar (Police and Judicial Co-operation in Criminal Matters) will be integrated into the first community pillar.
