The role of the National Rapporteur is exercised by the National Agency against Trafficking in Persons, a national governmental institution coordinated by the Ministry of Interior and Administrative Reform.

The National Rapporteur plays also a key role in the referral mechanism, ensuring the effective and prompt referral of the victims to the assistance services providers, as well as monitoring the assistance provided the victims with.

While being national governmental institution the National Rapporteur has the advantage of a closer cooperation with the law enforcement authorities (e.g. Police, Border Police, Gendarmerie, the Romanian Office for Immigration), as well as with the county and local administrations, which are coordinated by the same ministry. Subsequently, it has easier access to the necessary information and statistics. At the same time, given the Agency’s activity focused both on the prevention of trafficking and the assistance provided to victims, it leads to a close collaboration with the NGOs and the public institutions dealing with these issues.
